Subaru Outback utility specs

2021 Subaru Outback vs 2021 Honda CR-V: Utility & Comfort

The 2021 Outback and the 2021 CR-V may be the same width but the Outback is longer, which lends itself to having more legroom, shoulder room, and overall passenger volume. The CR-V may offer more cargo room behind the rear seat but when you lay the seats flat, both vehicles offer the same amount of space for luggage, groceries, or sporting equipment. The Outback comes standard with roof rails for extra cargo room but they're only available on the CR-V's highest trim level.

Slipping behind the wheel of either vehicle, you'll see standard six-way manual driver's seats, a standard automatic climate control, and standard heated front seats on all trim levels but the entry-level. The 2021 Outback offers ventilated front seats and heated rear outboard seats on the higher trim levels, features not available at all on the 2021 CR-V.

Subaru Outback technology specs

2021 Subaru Outback vs 2021 Honda CR-V: Technology

The 2021 Outback comes standard with a Multimedia infotainment system with a seven-inch touchscreen display complete with Bluetooth® for hands-free connectivity and audio streaming. Upgrading trim levels nets you a tablet-size 11.6-inch touchscreen display with navigation. The 2021 CR-V's standard infotainment center boasts only a five-inch display and when you upgrade trim levels, it's still only a small seven-inch screen. While Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ capability come standard on the Outback, you have to upgrade trim levels to get that amenity. Only the Outback offers a Harman Kardon® twelve-speaker premium audio system on the higher trim levels.

Subaru Outback performance specs

2021 Subaru Outback vs 2021 Honda CR-V: Performance

The standard 2.5L engine on the 2021 Outback may generate eight less horsepower than the 2021 CR-V's inline four-cylinder, but because it's a horizontally opposed BOXER® engine, it delivers better handling and acceleration than the Honda.  The Outback's 2.4L turbocharged engine makes a mighty 260 horsepower and 277 lb/ft of torque while the CR-V's turbocharged inline still only puts out 190 horsepower and 179 lb/ft of torque. Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive comes standard on the Outback, as well as 8.7 inches of ground clearance so driving on any terrain is possible. The CR-V offers only 7.8 inches of ground clearance and if you want All-Wheel Drive it will cost you another $1,500.

Subaru Outback safety specs

2021 Subaru Outback vs 2021 Honda CR-V: Safety

Both vehicles were awarded five stars by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and while the 2021 Honda CR-V was named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the 2021 Subaru Outback was named a Top Safety Pick+, the IIHS's highest honor. One reason for this distinguished accolade is the standard LED Steering Responsive headlights, an innovation that allows the headlights to swivel with the vehicle as it turns so you have better vision when cornering at night. This feature is not available on the CR-V.

Subaru Outback driver assist features

2021 Subaru Outback vs 2021 Honda CR-V: Driver Assist Features

Both vehicles offer a wide array of driver assist technology including standard Forward Collision Warning, Lane Keep Assist, and Adaptive Cruise Control. Blind Spot Monitor and rear Cross-Traffic Alert are available on both the Outback and the CR-V as well. But only the 2021 Outback has the standard EyeSight® technology which includes Pre-Collision Braking, Pre-Collision Throttle Management, and much more. Other Outback-only features are the available Reverse Automatic Braking, which engages the brakes when a collision is detected while in reverse, and the DriverFocus® Distraction Mitigation System. This ingenious feature will alert you if drowsy or distracted driving is detected.
