2020 Subaru Outback vs 2020 Forester Exterior

Exterior Design

Both these SUVs are rugged enough for all sorts of outdoor adventures! They each boast 8.7 inches of ground clearance, but there's even more equipment on the 2020 Subaru Outback as standard. It comes with raised roof rails and enhanced tie-downs for carrying more cargo accessories, durable alloy wheels and convenient High Beam Assist. On rural roads, High Beam Assist checks for oncoming traffic, turning your brights on and off automatically as necessary. These features are all available on the 2020 Subaru Forester as well, but they're not found on the base model.

Interior Features & Technology

With an all-new Outback model out for 2020, the interior has been completely refreshed with the latest in infotainment technology! The 2020 Subaru Forester comes with Subaru STARLINK™ infotainment, complete with a 6.5" touchscreen, Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay™. The 2020 Subaru Outback has the same features, but you'll interact with them through dual 7" touchscreens -- or upgrade to the portrait-oriented, 11.6" display for the most modern Subaru interior ever.

The 2020 Subaru Outback also offers some interior comfort and convenience features you don't get on the 2020 Subaru Forester. If you're in the market for an SUV with ventilated seats, StarTex water-repellent upholstery or Nappa leather-trimmed seats, these features can only be found on the 2020 Subaru Outback.

Performance & Towing

At the entry level, the 2020 Subaru Forester and Outback get the same engine: a 2.5L BOXER® engine making 182 horsepower. That's all the power you'll need for the daily drive -- but if you demand even more power, the 2020 Subaru Outback offers an available turbocharged engine upgrade. With 260 horsepower on tap, the 2020 Subaru Outback XT is the most powerful Outback ever.

As a result, the 2020 Subaru Outback boasts a greater towing capacity than the Forester. The 2020 Subaru Forester can tow 1,500 pounds. Meanwhile, the base engine 2020 Subaru Outback can tow 2,700 pounds while the 2020 Subaru Outback XT can tow up to 3,500 pounds.

Increasing traction and grip on low-friction, unpaved surfaces, X-MODE® technology helps make Subaru SUVs even more capable. This technology comes standard on the 2020 Subaru Outback, and a special dual-function X-MODE® comes standard on the XT models. On the 2020 Subaru Forester, you'll find X-MODE® as standard equipment on all but the base trim level.

Standard features of this important suite of safety features include pre-collision braking, lane keeping functions and adaptive cruise control. On the 2020 Subaru Outback, you'll even get Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering, to help make sitting in crowded freeway traffic virtually effortless.
